At the edge of Fangorn Forest, the Riders of Rohan under Éomer surround and destroy the Uruk-hai band carrying Merry and Pippin. In the chaos of the night battle, the two hobbits slip their bonds and crawl into the eaves of the forest, where they will encounter Treebeard. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrive the next morning to find the smouldering orc pyre and track the hobbits' trail into the trees.
