The Fords of Isen were the main crossing of the River Isen and a key strategic point between Rohan and Isengard. Saruman's forces attacked the Fords twice. In the first battle, Théodred, son of King Théoden and heir to Rohan, was slain—an event that plunged the kingdom into crisis and left it leaderless as war approached.
