Midgewater Marshes
After leaving Bree, Aragorn leads the hobbits off the Road to avoid the Nazgûl, and they spend several miserable days crossing the Midgewater Marshes — a trackless bog east of Bree infested with clouds of biting midges. It is unglamorous but necessary, and the hobbits begin to understand the hardship of life in the wild.
