After Shelob stings Frodo, the orcs of the tower carry his body inside. Sam, believing Frodo dead, takes the Ring — but overhears the orcs and realises Frodo is alive. He storms the tower alone, finding the garrison has slaughtered itself in a quarrel over Frodo's mithril coat. Sam returns the Ring and the two hobbits escape disguised as orcs into Mordor.
