After the War of the Ring, King Elessar granted the hobbits the land between the Far Downs and the Tower Hills, extending the Shire westward. This region became the Westmarch. Sam's eldest daughter Elanor and her husband Fastred of Greenholm settled here as Wardens of Westmarch. The Red Book of Westmarch — the in-universe manuscript from which The Lord of the Rings is said to be copied — was kept by their descendants in this land.
