Bywater
The Scouring of the Shire
Returning home, the four hobbits find the Shire under the tyranny of 'Sharkey' — Saruman, diminished but vengeful. Merry and Pippin rouse the Shire-folk, and at the Battle of Bywater the ruffians are overthrown. Frodo confronts Saruman at Bag End and offers mercy, but Gríma Wormtongue turns on his master and slays him. It is the last killing in the War of the Ring.
