Here the River Carnen (Redwater), flowing from the Iron Hills, merges with the River Running (Celduin) from Erebor and the Long Lake. The combined waters then flow south into the Sea of Rhûn. The Carnen's name, meaning 'Redwater,' likely refers to iron-rich sediments carried from the Dwarven mines of the Iron Hills. This confluence lay in the broad lands of Rhovanion, far from the centres of power in the west.
