The Emyn-nu-Fuin, or 'Mountains under Night,' are a range of forested hills in southern Mirkwood. When Sauron established his stronghold at Dol Guldur, the shadow spread through the forest, transforming Greenwood the Great into Mirkwood. These mountains, shrouded in the darkness of the Necromancer's influence, became part of the perilous southern reaches that travellers avoided. The Old Forest Road once passed near here but fell into disuse as the forest grew ever more dangerous.
