Once a thriving trade town at the crossing of the Greyflood on the North-South Road, Tharbad fell into ruin as both Arnor and Gondor declined. By the time of the War of the Ring, only crumbling walls remained. Boromir lost his horse fording the river here on his long journey from Minas Tirith to Rivendell, and had to continue on foot.
