Sauron began building his fortress in Mordor around SA 1000, using the power of the One Ring. The Dark Tower was besieged and thrown down by the Last Alliance, but because it was built with the Ring's power, it could not be fully destroyed while the Ring endured. Sauron rebuilt it when he returned to Mordor in the Third Age.
