Two years after the defeat of Sauron, Isildur and his company were ambushed by Orcs while marching north along the Anduin. Isildur put on the One Ring to escape, but it slipped from his finger in the river and he was slain by Orc arrows. The Ring was lost for nearly 2,500 years.
