In the upper vales of the Anduin, near the Gladden River, lived a small community of Stoors — a hobbit-like river-folk. It was here that Déagol found the One Ring while fishing, and his cousin Sméagol murdered him to possess it. Corrupted by the Ring over five centuries, Sméagol became the wretched creature Gollum, eventually retreating to the roots of the Misty Mountains. The Ring's long journey from Isildur's loss at the Gladden Fields to Bilbo's finding it in Gollum's cave began in these quiet woods.
