Once a fertile region east of the Anduin tended by the Entwives, the Brown Lands were scorched and destroyed by Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance. The Entwives vanished and were never found — their loss is the source of Treebeard’s great sorrow. By the Third Age the land was a barren, treeless waste. The Fellowship passed along its western edge while travelling down the Great River.
