Durin the Deathless, eldest of the seven Fathers of the Dwarves, awoke at Mount Gundabad and wandered south to the Mirrormere. There he founded Khazad-dûm, the greatest mansion of the Dwarves, which endured through all the ages until the Balrog was awakened in its depths.
