The Orocarni, or Red Mountains, formed the eastern boundary of Middle-earth in the earliest ages. In Tolkien's cosmology, four of the seven Dwarf clans (the Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, and Stonefoots) awoke at sites in or near these mountains. The Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando, were sent east and may have worked among the peoples of these distant lands to counter Sauron's influence.
