Meneltarma, the Pillar of the Heavens, was the sacred mountain at the heart of Númenor. When King Ar-Pharazôn the Golden sailed with a great armada against Valinor, Eru Ilúvatar broke and changed the world. Númenor was swallowed by the sea, and the Undying Lands were removed from the circles of the world forever. Only the Faithful, led by Elendil and his sons, escaped to found the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor.
